Last Second Three Falls Short As Comets Clip Mustangs
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The Mustangs (1-14, 1-6 WHAC) and Comets of Olivet College went head-to-head in what turned out to be a thriller at The Palace of Auburn Hills Friday (Dec. 28) with the Comets holding on by a narrow margin, 72-69.
The Mustangs, down four at the half 29-25, raced back to nearly escape The Palace of Auburn Hills with a win. Last second three-point attempts by Jordan Al (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn) and Cameron Coburn (Bay City, Mich./All Saints) would fall short as the Comets squeaked out a victory to improve to 5-6 on the season.
Freshman forward Manny Washington (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford) led the Mustangs with 16 points. The freshman added three rebounds and three highlight reel blocks in the one-possession loss. Washington helped lead the Mustangs’ charge to close the game after he completed an old-fashioned three point play to bring the Mustangs to within one with 32.1 seconds to go.
Freshman guard Diante Taylor (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) added 14 points to go along with six assists.
Tomorrow (Dec. 29), the Mustangs will head to NCAA DI Youngstown State University for a 2:05 p.m. tipoff. The short turnaround will be tough for a young Mustangs team that sits at 1-14 on the season. The Saturday matinee matchup will count as an exhibition for the Mustangs.
