DeVoe Begins 2012 Strong
The Mustangs went into the first race of the season competing against several NCAA Division I&II programs, as well as a few Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) counterparts.
Picking up where she left off last season, senior Shana DeVoe (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) raced to a team-best 21:37 in the season-opening 5K event. The time landed DeVoe in 52nd place out of a field of 100 participants.
The time was a mere 33 seconds off her personal/school record time of 21:04 (Lansing Invitational, 2011) despite a steady wind and Cass Benton’s hilly terrain.
“Shana finished ahead of the goal I set for her today,” said head coach LaCema Womack of DeVoe’s performance. “She is ahead of last year’s pace at this time of year and seems poised to compete strongly once we compete against our conference later in the season,” added Womack.
NOTES: Full results were not available at the time of this release. Freshmen Mercedesz Brown (Redford, Mich./Thurston) and Devin Willis (Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) also competed  at the Titan Invite. The 5K race marked the first intercollegiate race for the pair of newcomers for the Mustangs.
