Mustangs Split Friday DH with the CU Eagles

UTICA, Mich. – The Marygrove College baseball team hosted Cornerstone University in their last home doubleheader of the season. The Mustangs won game one 2-1 behind Danial Bailey’s phenomenal pitching and a huge two-run home run in the first inning by Chase Younkin (SR/Macomb, MI). Game two, the Mustangs lost 15-7, Marygrove trailed early on and could not find a way to fight back 

GAME ONE (Won 2-1):

OVERALL || 

The Mustangs (5-29, 4-20 WHAC) jumped out to an early 2-0  lead in the bottom of the first after Chase Younkin hit a homerun over the right field fence! The home run scored Chase Turner (SO/Birmingham, MI) after her reach on a hit-by-pitch and stole second base.  

In the top of the sixth, Cornerstone scored a run off of a SAC fly to cut the lead 2-1.

Daniel Bailey (JR/Clinton Township, MI) and the Marygrove defense would hold the Eagles the rest of the contest to earn the victory 2-1

AT THE PLATE ||

The Mustangs earned four hits off of the Eagles pitching staff.

GAME TWO (LOSS, 15-7):

OVERALL ||

The Mustangs (5-29, 4-20 WHAC) trailed 1-0 after the first inning when Cornerstone scored off of an error by the Mustang defense.

In the top of the second, the Eagles scored four more runs to lead 5-0. In the top of the third, CU brought two more runs across the plate off of a two-run home run to lead 7-0.

In the bottom of the third, Chase Turner started the inning off with a stand-up double to right field. He advanced to third base off a Richie Velez (SR/Chicago, IL) fly out to the right fielder. Chase Younkin scored Turner on a groundout to second base to cut the lead 7-1.

In the top of the fourth, fifth, and sixth, the Eagles added a total of eight runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Mustangs rallied to score six runs to cut the lead 15-7. 

Cornerstone’s pitching staff and the defense held the Mustangs the rest of the contest tieing the series.
