GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Marygrove volleyball ended the second half of a WHAC back-to-back with a 3-0 loss at Cornerstone University on Saturday (Sept. 12) in Grand Rapids. The host Golden Eagles (6-3, 4-0 WHAC) – a team receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Poll – recorded 42 kills in the three-set contest and held the Mustangs (1-8, 0-4 WHAC) to 12, a season low for the Green and Gold.

Brenna Donnelly (Yale, Mich./Mott CC) and Rachel Staudt (Novi, Mich./Lawrence Tech) accounted for nine of the Mustangs’ 12 kills on the afternoon.

The Golden Eagles lowest set total for kills was 13 throughout Saturday’s conference match.

The Mustangs challenged one of the nation’s top 30 teams in the early stages of the match, bringing the first set to within three, 17-14, when sophomore outside hitter Hailey Brandes (Southgate, Mich./Anderson High School) put down a kill to give the Green and Gold life.

An 8-2 run halted the Mustangs’ chances at an upset bid as the Golden Eagles walked away with the first set, 25-16, before winning the final two frames, 25-11 and 25-10.

The Golden Eagles were balanced in victory as five players recorded six-or-more kills.

The Mustangs return home to host Indiana Tech on Wednesday (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m. inside the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. The Mustang Sports Network will stream the match live on marygrovemustangs.com/live beginning at 6:45 p.m.
