HAMMOND, Ind. — A fast start and unrelenting attack on net by the host Purdue Calumet Peregrines doomed Marygrove women’s soccer on Tuesday (Sept. 1) as the Mustangs dropped the season opener by a 9-1 final tally in Hammond, Ind. The Peregrines (1-2-0) raced out to a 5-0 lead at the break and never looked back, toppling the shorthanded and young Mustangs (0-1-0) behind a barrage of shots.

Tuesday’s season-opening game was the first on the sidelines for new head coach Worteh Sampson after the longtime men’s soccer assistant took the helm in April. Sampson entered the game with only 11 active student-athletes and played a third of the game down a player due to the team’s shorthanded state to begin the campaign.

The Mustangs are anticipating more help to arrive by way of eligibility and health, soon.

Raven Buck (Westland, Mich./John Glenn High School), one of three freshmen brought in over the summer by Sampson, pushed forward to tally the Mustangs lone goal of the contest in the 57th minute. Fellow freshman Allison McDowell (Novi, Mich./Novi High School) assisted the Buck goal, cutting the Peregrine lead back to five, 6-1, before the hosts closed out the contest with three-straight scoring tallies to win by the 9-1 margin.

Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) – the Mustangs starting keeper – sat out with an injury while teammate Henrietta Addo (Ghana, West Africa/Henry Ford CC) stepped in to toss on the keeper gloves. Addo saved 15 shots in her goalkeeping debut.
