Welcome back to the #MGTop10! Today we take a look at our ninth-best moment from the 2014-15 season, a spot fit for @MGroveGOLF’s Michael Kanalas and his season-low 76 (+4) at WHAC Jamboree Four on Oct. 6, 2014. The 76 was also a career-best round for Kanalas, shaving four strokes off of his previous low (80). The impressive round helped the Mustangs top a fellow WHAC team for the first time in program history, besting Concordia-Ann Arbor by seven strokes after teammate Tyler Newell helped stave off the Cardinals with a stellar round of 81 (+9). Want to get in on the conversation? ORIGINAL RELEASE
CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Marygrove men’s golf team has enjoyed plenty of record performances throughout the 2014 fall campaign under the direction of head coach and PGA Pro Frank McAuliffe. On Monday (Oct. 6), the Mustangs were able to celebrate a new milestone after WHAC Jamboree Four at Caledonia’s Stonewater Country Club as sophomore Michael Kanalas (Rives Junction, Mich./Jackson Northwest High School) posted a career-best round of 76 (+4) to lead the team to a program-low score of 338 despite poor weather conditions.
The low score at Monday’s rain-soaked and weather-delayed conference jamboree allowed the Mustangs to leap a fellow WHAC competitor for the first time in program history as the team trumped Concordia-Ann Arbor by seven strokes.Â
Kanalas’ record day catapulted the sophomore into an 11-way tie at four-over, good for 17th place overall in the conference event. The sophomore’s four-over day eclipsed his previous best round of 80 set on the same course last season at the WHAC Championships.
Tyler Newell (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) followed Kanalas with a well-played round of 81 (+9). For Newell, the round was one of many solid performances this season as the sophomore continues to be a steady force for the young team. Monday’s nine-over effort would land Newell in a four-way tie for 43rd as the sophomore fell one-stroke shy of tying his career low (80) set earlier this season.
Sophomore Jimmy Stewart (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte High School) and freshman Ryne Underwood (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek High School) rounded out the team’s record performance with rounds of 90 and 91, respectively.
The team score of 338 â the latest in a season-long string of low scores â comes in the 12th event of team-score eligibility for the Mustangs as the young program continues to grow.
The Mustangs will hit the course again Friday (Oct. 10) for the fall season’s fifth and final WHAC Jamboree in Ohio at Sylvania Country Club.
