ADRIAN, Mich. — The Mustangs traveled to Adrian, Mich. Saturday (Feb. 7) for the latter half of the WHAC home-and-home set with N0. 20 Siena Heights, losing 89-44 to the host Saints as the 2014-15 regular season winds down. The Mustangs nearly upset the ranked Saints in Detroit back on Nov. 15, 2014, but had no such luck Saturday as the hosts won the conference tilt in wire-to-wire fashion to drop the Green and Gold to 4-22 overall and 2-16 in WHAC play.
Siena Heights notched their 20th win of the campaign while improving to 14-4 in conference action.
The Mustangs, running into their fourth Top-25 team of the season, allowed the Saints to shoot out to an 11-0 lead over the first three-plus minutes of the contest. Junior guard Elisha Major (Flushing, Mich./Flushing High School) finally got the Mustangs on the board at the 16:02 mark of the opening half with a layup to cut the Saints lead to 11-2.
A Kierra Jordan (Westland, Mich./John Glenn High School) bucket with 14:16 left on the first-half clock brought the Mustangs to within 10 at 15-5, but the Saints pulled away behind a 13-0 run over the next five minute to hold a commanding 28-5 advantage.
The pair of double-digit bursts put the Mustangs in a 51-21 hole heading into the locker room at the half. The Saints shot 18-of-32 in the first half for a 56-percent clip, while the Mustangs struggled from the field to shoot 6-of-33 from the field for an 18-percent effort.
Despite the unlucky shooting half, the Mustangs were able to find success by taking a narrow 12-10 edge in points off turnovers into the halftime break after forcing the Saints into nine first-half miscues. Raeha Weaver (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) led the Mustangs effort in the first half by dropping in 12 of the team’s 21 points while tallying four rebounds and a pair of steals in 17 minutes of action.
The Mustangs put together a better second half, but the hosts’ 30-point halftime lead was too much to overcome as the Saints pulled away to win, xx-xx. The 45-point defeat was a product of a difficult shooting night as the Mustangs only connected on 12 field goals against the nation’s 20th-ranked team.
Major and Weaver led the Mustangs 12 points each while Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) added 11 points of her own and six rebounds. Micaiah King (Detroit, Mich./Wayne County CC) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss for the Mustangs.
Mackenzie Tomasik and Morgan Warfield chipped in 15 points each for the Saints.
The Mustangs visit Lourdes for a 6 p.m. tip-off Wednesday (Feb. 11).
