LIMA, Ohio – The Marygrove men’s soccer team visited WHAC foe Northwestern Ohio Saturday (Nov. 1) to close out a memorable 2014 regular season. The Mustangs (7-10-1, 6-3-1 WHAC), likely to remain in the WHAC’s fourth spot, entered Ohio with the mindset of resting players and preparing for the upcoming conference playoffs, sending most of the starting 11 to the bench early on against the conference’s number-one team.

The Racers (13-3-1, 9-1-0 WHAC) had more at stake, Saturday, needing a tie or better to win the WHAC regular season title outright. The hosts wasted no time working toward their goal, topping the green Mustangs lineup by a 7-0 tally.

The host Racers took advantage of the new-look Mustangs roster, shooting 25 times (15 on target) compared to five shots (one on target) for the Green and Gold. Playing his second game at keeper this season, junior Khalid Suleiman (Tulkarm, Palestine/Madonna University) was under fire all afternoon, stopping eight of the Racers’ 15 shots sent toward the net.

With the loss, the Mustangs settle into the WHAC’s fourth spot for the upcoming conference tournament. The top-four spot will bring the first postseason game to Marygrove’s campus as the Mustangs prepare to host the conference’s fifth-seed, Aquinas College, Saturday (Nov. 8) at 2 p.m.

The Aquinas College Saints earned the conference’s fifth spot and a meeting with the Mustangs in Detroit next weekend with a win and losses by Concordia-Ann Arbor and Indiana Tech Saturday night (Nov. 1). The Mustangs defeated the Saints, 2-0, on Oct. 18 in Detroit thanks to goals from Mohamed Alkhulaidi (Sana’a, Yemen/Michigan-Dearborn) and (Alex Cabildo (Westland, Mich./John Glenn High School).
