ADRIAN, Mich. – The Marygrove men’s golf team hit the links for the second time in as many days Saturday (Sept. 27) when they marched out to compete in the third WHAC Jamboree of the fall season. The jamboree, hosted by Siena Heights University, was held at Lenawee Country Club in Adrian as 59 of the conference’s best golfers squared off in the third of five total jamborees this fall.

Down a golfer and unable to post a team score, the Mustangs fielded a team of three that included Michael Kanalas (Rives Junction, Mich./Jackson Northwest High School), Tyler Newell (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) and Jimmy Stewart (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte High School) as the trio aimed to improve upon their fall scores Saturday afternoon.

A day after struggling through a 92 at the Cleary Invite, sophomore Tyler Newell was steady en route to posting a +11 (82) to finish 35th of 59 at Lenawee Country Club. The round of 82 was four shots off of a top-20 finish for Newell as he continues a midseason push that has brought him sub-85 rounds in two of his previous three outings.

Newell’s round of 82 was followed by a pair of +16 (87) rounds from Kanalas and Stewart. For Stewart, the round was on par for his season and career as the sophomore has posted an 87.6 average this season and an 87.1 mark for his career.

Kanalas’ round was one stroke better than his season average, which is two shots higher than his career mark after a breakout freshman campaign in 2013. The Jackson Northwest product is coming on as of late and is poised for a late-season run with back-to-back quality rounds Friday and Saturday.
