DETROIT — The home opener finally arrived Friday (Sept. 19) for Marygrove women’s soccer as the host Mustangs welcomed Utah’s Westminster College to Detroit for a non-conference matinee matchup. The visiting Griffins – a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll – improved to 7-0-1 on the season en route to spoiling the home opener for the Mustangs to win, 6-0.

The Mustangs drop to 0-6-0 overall with the loss as they await home games Monday (Sept.22) and Tuesday (Sept. 23) against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) and St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.), respectively.

Friday’s first half started off on a good note for the underdog Mustangs as Cheyenne York (Taylor, Mich./Truman) sent a pair of shots on target to challenge the Griffins starting keeper, Abi Yanke. York drew a yellow card on the Griffins in the sixth minute after she snuck behind the defense on her way to a one-on-one situation with Yanke. York was tripped up to draw the yellow, but the free kick that followed went awry to keep the game scoreless early.

The Griffins struck on their first of three opening half goals a minute later as Rylei North stole Stephanie Pilarski’s (Warren, Mich./Macomb CC) clear  for the easy go-ahead goal. The Griffins also tucked in goals in the 13th and 31st minute to run out to a 3-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Mustangs could not hold back the Griffin attack to fall by a 6-0 final after allowing goals in the 66th, 69th and 74th minutes.

Playing without starting defender and Utah native, Olimpia Bonilla (West Jordan, Utah/Barton CC), the Mustangs were outshot 24-4 overall and 14-3 on goal Friday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Hailey Varney (Flushing, Mich./Auguste-Pattberg-Schule) returned from injury to send a shot on goal for the Mustangs in the non-conference defeat.
