MUNSTER, Ind. — After being blanked three straight games, the Marygrove women’s soccer team (0-5-0) got their offense rolling with a pair of goals Wednesday (Sept. 17) in a road night game against the Peregrines of Purdue University Calumet (4-2-0). Despite the offensive uptick, the Mustangs ended up on the wrong end of a 6-2 decision as the Peregrines continued their early season stretch of good soccer.

Senior midfielder/forward Cheyenne York (Taylor, Mich./Truman) had one of her many quality games donning a Marygrove uniform after amassing eight shots, six on target, to help keep the Mustangs offensive alive in Indiana. York put the Mustangs on the board with her second goal of the season (18th career) in the 58th minute to snap a stretch of three unanswered goals by the Peregrines. York’s tally – also the second goal for the team on the season – was assisted by fellow senior Kaitlyn Vigna (China Twp., Mich./Marine City) to bring the Mustangs to within two goals, 3-1.

The Peregrines tacked on two more to take a four-goal lead into the game’s final 20 minutes before junior transfer Bianca Barron (Salt Lake City, Utah/Barton Community College) found the back of the net for the first time since joining the Mustangs in August. Barron’s goal was made possible by a Kamry Miller (New Boston, Mich./UM-Dearborn) in the 71st minute to bring the Mustangs back to within three, 5-2.

A Peregrine goal in the 80th minute ended any hopes of a comeback as the Mustangs remained winless in the 6-2 setback.

Barron’s goal comes one outing prior to her and fellow Utah native Olimpia Bonillia’s (West Jordan, Utah/Barton Community College) game against their hometown NAIA team, Westminster College, Friday (Sept. 19) at Marygrove. The game, also the Mustangs home opener, will be broadcast via live video on the Mustang Sports Network at marygrovemustangs.com/live. Opening kick is slated for 12 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 11:50 a.m.
