MenÂs Track & Field Heads to WHAC Championships
DETROIT, Mich. â A trip to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships is on the line Friday (May 2) when the Marygrove men’s track & field team travels to Siena Heights University for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Championships. Head coach LaCema Womack and the Mustangs will compete against the rest of the field for the second year in a row after Marygrove joined the heralded conference in 2012.
Once again, veterans Robert Crockett (Detroit, Mich./King) and Marcell Houston (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) will don the Mustang Green & Gold against a talented field. The pair will toe the line in their respective events in search of their first trip to nationals since arriving on the northwest Detroit campus.
Houston, looking forward to the 800m event, is in the best stretch of his collegiate career in the mid-distance run. At the Al Owens Classic two weeks ago, Houston shaved six seconds off of his time to clock in at 2:04.05. The time placed Houston near the middle of a loaded pack of NCAA DI, II and NAIA talent.
Crockett hopes for a repeat of last year’s WHAC Championships where he set two PRs. The then-sophomore crossed the finish line at 2:03.06 in the 800 and finished at 4:26.10 in the 1,500m a year ago.
The Mustangs will take on the WHAC field beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. A recap will be available on MarygroveMustangs.com once official results are released.
