Crockett, Houston Finish Well-Rounded Day at SHU
ADRIAN, Mich. — Marygrove track & field veteran leaders Robert Crockett (Detroit, Mich./King) and Marcell Houston (Detroit, Mich./Mumford)  entered their first outdoor competition of the 2014 season Saturday (April 12) when they visited Siena Heights University for the Don Kleinow Invitational. The season-opening meet at Siena Heights gave the team a look at the site of the upcoming Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Championships to be held May 1 & 2 on the Saints’ campus.
Crockett took part in the 400m and 1,500m to open his season and put forth a solid showing in both events. Crockett’s day began with the 1,500m where he finished 30th with a time of 4:35.84. After a brief rest, Crockett hit his stride in the 400m to finish 27th overall. The junior clocked in with a time of 56.54 in the one-lap sprint and beat out a pair of WHAC competitors in the 400.
Led by third year head coach LaCema Womack, the Mustangs day ended well when Houston worked his way toward the top of his heat in the talent-laden 200m. A nine-heat event, the packed 200 field featured All-Americans and student-athletes from all divisions as Houston shrugged it aside to finish with a time of 25.65. Houston’s stellar time landed him in 43rd place. Houston finished 35th in the 800m earlier in the day with a time of 2:10.22.
The Mustangs will return to action Saturday (April 19) when they travel to Grand Valley State University for the Al Owens Classic.
